Fuel Dilution %
- Definition
- Fuel Dilution is the amount of raw, unburned fuel that ends up in the crankcase. It lowers an oil's viscosity and flash point - creating friction-related wear almost immediately by reducing film strength.
- Standard Test Method Used
- FTIR - ASTM E2412
- Reporting Measurement
- %
- Amount of Sample Needed
- 40 mL
- Test Limitation
- FTIR - High fuel saturation can result in false readings. If test produces inaccurate results, sample is tested using the Head Gas Analyzer. Head Gas Analyzer - Fuel dilution measured by the concentration of fumes in the sample's head gas. Mini Flash - If FTIR and Head Gas Analyzer tests are positive for fuel, flash point is tested to determine whether or not it is within specifications.
