Ion Chromatography
Additives (nitrite & nitrate), Contaminants (chloride & sulfate), and Degradation Acids (glycolate, acetate, formate & oxalate)
- Definition
- Nitrites and nitrates are metal-protecting inhibitors. Chlorides and sulfates are contaminants. Chlorides can come from source water or air leaks. Sulfates can come from source water, combustion gas leaks or residual sulfuric acid cleaner. Both have the potential to form acids. Sulfate can also form scale. Glycolate, acetate, formate and oxalate are a result of the thermal breakdown of ethylene glycol.
- Standard Test Method Used
- ASTM D5827
- Reporting Measurement
- ppm (parts per million)
- Amount of Sample Needed
- 5 mL
- Test Limitation
- IC is an inferential measurement technique. Coolants can contain other components that will co-elute with the desired analytes. Other techniques may be used to identify any issues.
