Thermal Stability

Definition
Thermal Stability is a measure of a fuel's tendency to produce asphaltenes when exposed to high temperatures. Asphaltenes are tar-like, resinous substances often responsible for plugging fuel filters. Fuel with a Thermal Stability of 80% or greater should not cause filter plugging. Fuels between 60% and 80% could have a marginal affect and values less than 60% will significantly reduce filter life.
Standard Test Method Used
mod. ASTM D6468
